Skinni Popcorn - No Fuss Movie Buzz

Unedited, unbiased social media movie barometer

  • Real peoples’ opinions in real time
  • Lets the world ask the question "is this worth seeing?"
  • Made by interactive design company mN

August 2009: In depth movie reviews are great, but sometimes you just want to know “is this worth seeing?” You also want to hear what ‘real people’ (rather than critics) are saying about new movie releases. Website Skinni Popcorn allows you to do just this. It is an unbiased, uncensored web site that harnesses the power of Twitter to tell you (yes, you) what people are saying about the movies you are interested in watching.

The site was created after one of the team at interactive design company magneticNorth (mN) was stuck deciding what to go and see at the movies. All they could find were sites with long critic reviews and ratings systems. They were stood in-line waiting to buy tickets and just needed a quick hit of unbiased information. They couldn’t find it, so mN made Skinni Popcorn.

Created specifically with on-the-go usage in mind, the site uses real time comments about newly released films and the current US box office top ten, to create a unique social media movie buzz barometer. There is no rating system, no opportunity to buy tickets - just pure uncensored and unadulterated chatter about movies.

All Skinni Popcorn users have to do is quickly scan the ‘Now Showing’ section of the site and see what the world is saying about the film they want to see. If they loved it, hated it, cried or preferred the leading man’s hairstyle to the plot line. It’s no fuss movie buzz designed to help them decide what movies to watch…or avoid.

If they feel the need for more details, people can also view the trailers of the films featured throughout the site. In addition if they want to read a more professional take on the film there is a synopsis and link out to the movie reviewer gods at the New York Times.

Free and simple to use Skinni Popcorn is completely unlike any other movie site on the market. Initially using only Twitter as a feed it will introduce other social media sites into the mix as it grows and develops its community.

Quotes

Brendan Dawes, Creative Director, magneticNorth (mN)

“Skinni Popcorn is effectively a movie review site that’s been on a very strict diet. We removed the unneeded and just left the needed so people can fire it up, get a quick overview of whether a film is worth seeing, powered by everyday people like you, and then get on with the rest of the day.”

Lou Cordwell, Managing Director, magneticNorth (mN)

“Skinni Popcorn shows the power in the collective and we really felt there was a gap in the market place for the site. Whilst sites like Rotten Tomatoes and other rating and critic sites are great, sometimes people just want honest words from people like them. Skinni Popcorn ticks this box and we are confident people will love its no fuss approach.”
