Meet mN Social

For years we’ve been making digital destinations for client companies and brands – it makes sense that we’re also best placed to help generate noise around this activity and drive people to these digital destinations – hence we launched magneticNorth social in late 2011.

We’re in a unique position of having been product creators and brand managers of our own consumer brands – with modest budgets and tough choices to make about what marketing activity will get our brands cut through.

Social media has been at the heart of every successful brand launch and campaign we have managed and we believe that a blend of social media and ‘real world’ activity is the formula to increasing fan base, influencer awareness and of course sales.

In fact, we know so. We’ve launched brands from a standing start to sales of 3,000 units in one week, generated huge amounts of media coverage and approaches from retailers and distributors by getting products into the hands of the right bloggers and online tastemakers. In 2011, the products we created and launched ourselves (details below!) grew to such a size that they required their own products company and are now owned and operated by product design company Beep Industries.

  • MoviePeg

    MoviePeg

    After taking the idea from a notebook sketch to a physical product, we devised and implemented a launch strategy for this family of iPhone and iPad accessories. Putting social media at the heart of the launch we engaged with key Apple and design influencers to deliver Tweets and coverage that sold 3,000 units in seven days. Post launch we used social media to grow the brand’s personality and grow it to a product that is now sold in 72 countries and retailers such as John Lewis and Urban Outfitters.

  • MIXA

    MIXA

    We created MIXA, a digital mix tape, because we felt like people weren’t sharing their digital stuff in a loving and fun way. Sure you can email someone a playlist or drop it in ‘the Cloud’ but giving an old-fashioned cassette mix tape (with a 2GB USB nestled in there) is a tangible way of saying ‘I Love You’. Social media was key to building the brand profile and helped ensure we were featured on ‘the right’ music and design blogs. We also coordinated several strategic partnerships with brands including Rough Trade Records and this combination of activity saw first year sales revenues of £100,000 delivered on an initial investment of £5,000.

  • Santa Tweets

    Santa Tweets

    We created a Twitter based concept that, for the first time ever, gave a 'voice' to the iconic Father Christmas that sits above the town hall in Manchester. During December 2011 he tweeted out festive news and bantered with the people of Manchester. It was a small brand building exercise that showed the city is thinking creatively about ways to engage with its citizens.

    In addition to developing the idea we were also able to work with our clients at Marketing Manchester to create screens that showcased his Twitter feed in the city’s Visitors Centre and we hope to build on the activity during the run up to Christmas 2012.

A brand geek through and through, Kate has clear ideas on which social media channels work and having been a key team member during the development and launch of our own products MoviePeg and MIXA, is totally in-tune with the entrepreneurial spirit of independent brands.

Before joining magneticNorth and heading up the social media team, Kate devised and implemented publicity and marketing campaigns for clients including Nike, Sony, Unilever and PepsiCo at PR agencies in both Manchester, London and New York. She is a familiar face at creative industry events and is an organiser of Instagram ‘InstaMeet-Ups’ in Manchester.
